What Is A Master Systems Integrator?
A Master Systems Integrator (MSI) is a company or organization that specializes in integrating various systems and subsystems to create a cohesive and functional whole. This can include integrating hardware, software, and networks to meet the specific needs of a client or project. MSIs often work on large-scale projects, such as building automation systems, industrial control systems, and enterprise resource planning systems, among others. They are responsible for coordinating the work of other systems integrators and subcontractors to ensure that all components of the system work together properly and meet the requirements of the client.
What is the role of the Master Systems Integrator?
The role of the MSI has evolved beyond just deploying an Integration Platform. Scope now extends to input, oversight & in some cases delivery of the converged network as well as cyber security measures & risk assessments. These responsibilities mean that the MSI must be an independent technology expert with skills, experience & expertise that extends beyond just OT & into IT to support all the technology that allows connected devices to communicate openly & in harmony with one another.
What skills does the Master Systems Integrator have?
As the emergence of connected devices continue to evolve, a Master Systems Integrator’s experience and expertise must extend beyond OT and into IT to support the active hardware and structured cabling that allows all connected devices to communicate securely and reliably in a building.
When to engage a Master Systems Integrator?
There is a direct correlation between appointing the right MSI at the right time & achieving the clients vision for their Smart Building.
On one hand, clients have understood the importance of elevating the MSI in the value chain & in some cases, are now engaging the MSI outside of the normal contractual process. this results in the MSI either being appointed before or in parallel with traditional services consultants/engineers & allowing the MSI to drive & have input into all integration elements of a project. this direct engagement with the client remains throughout the delivery phase of a project or in some cases, the MSI may be novated to the successful builder once contracts are awarded. the result - the client, through partnership with their trusted MSI remains in complete control & essentially has an advocate ensuring that each & every aspect of the integration is achieved.
On the other hand, in some cases the role of the MSI can be buried in either Mechanical and/or Electrical specifications. this is a pitfall that must be avoided. in these cases it’s really a lucky dip as to who may end up as the MSI. The decision making is put in the hands of contractors who will make a cost driven decision and from the client side, you don't know which contractor masquerading as an MSI you will get ie. Mech/BMS/Elec/Comms/IT.
